COMMUNITY SERVICES DIVISION - CRIME PREVENTION SECTION

WHAT IS NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH?

Neighborhood Watch is the fastest growing crime prevetion propgram in the United States. This program is promoted by the Pinellas County Sheirff's Office. Every neighbor is considered to be a member of our community's Neighborhood Watch. It operates on the concept that effective crime prevention requires citizen cooperation with law enforcement. Neighborhood Watch is "neighbors looking out for the welfare of their neighbors." It is a coalition of citizens who are concerned about the neighborhood where they live and are willing to become involved in the betterment of their community. The law enforcement can do a lot to prevent crime through intense patrol efforts and educational programs. If you do not report a crime and do your part and deny the criminal with the opportunity to commit a crime. Denying the the opportunity to commit a crime breaks the cycle of crime: ability - criminal desire - opportunity.

WHY IS IT NECESSARY?

The problem of crime effects everyone, directly as a crime victim, or indirectly through higher taxes for the ciminal justice system or higher insurance rates. The answer to the problem is not in the number of police alone, but a begining to the solution is working together with concerned citizens, who are willing to get involved, to work to solve the problems of the community.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

It works through mutal aid. Neighbors watching out for neighbors. Residents in Neighborhood Watch are trained in how to reconginze suspicious or criminal activity and report these activities to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office. It is improtant that you try to attend the Neighborhood Watch meetings. The key to success is communication and cooperation between residents and the Sheriff's Office. Neighborhood Watch will make your community a better and safer place to live.

REMEMBER:

The most important of ALL Neighborhood Watch members is COMMUNICATION.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO APPROACH OR APPREHEND A SUSPECT!!! STAY IN YOUR HOME. AT NIGHT, TURN ON THE OUTSIDE LIGHTS AND TURN ON THE INSIDE LIGHTS. BE SURE TO LOCK DOORS AND WINDOWS. LET THE SHERIFF'S DEPUTIES HANDLE THE SITUATION.

IF YOU SEE ANY ILLEGAL OR SUSPICIOUS ACITIVITY PLEASE REPORT IT TO SHERIFF'S OFFICE. THEN CALL THE NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH COMMUNICATIONS LEADER SO THAT SHE CAN GET THE WORD OUT TO THE COMMUNITY. BEFORE RATHER THAN AFTER THE CRIME HAS BEEN COMMITTED.

ONLY CALL 911 IF IT'S AN EMERGENCY. OTHERWISE CALL THE SHEIRFF'S OFFICE. THIS PREVENTS THE LINES FROM BEING TIED UP.
HELP YOURSELF BY HELPING YOUR NEIGHBORS.

WHENVER POSSIBLE PLEASE PROVIDE US WITH THE INFORMATION AS YOU CAN AND IT WILL BE POSTED ON THIS SITE.

THANKS FOR HELPING PROTECT THE EASTLAKE OAKS COMMUNTIY.
